James W. Collett, Ph.D., J.D. is a registered patent attorney with over 20 years of experience in the procurement and strategic management of intellectual property. Dr. Collett received his Juris Doctorate degree at Southwestern University School of Law and is licensed to practice law in California.
Dr. Collett has had the opportunity to represent clients in a wide variety of technologies, with an emphasis in the areas of biotechnology and bioassays, pharmaceuticals, small molecules and chemicals, and medical devices. He has extensive experience with the U.S. and international prosecution of patents as well as post-issuance proceedings, IP due diligence, the strategic management of international patent portfolios, counseling of senior management of client companies on IP matters, and the negotiation and drafting of IP and related corporate agreements.
Dr. Collett has worked in the corporate setting as an in-house attorney and as an associate at law firms. He has represented a variety of clients, including large corporations, small companies, start-ups, universities, and individual inventors. Dr. Collett has worked one his own or at a small boutique IP law firms for several years. Prior to that Dr. Collett served as the Director of Intellectual Property at Paramount BioSciences LLC, a venture capital and biotechnology company startup breeder organization. Dr. Collett has also worked as an associate at the large general practice law firms Duane Morris LLP and Buchanan Ingersoll LLP, as an in-house patent attorney at Amylin Pharmaceuticals, and as a law clerk, patent agent, and associate at the IP boutique law firm Sheldon & Mak.
Dr. Collett received his Ph.D. in the Department of Biological Chemistry at U.C. Irvine in 1993, where his doctoral thesis focused on utilizing molecular biology and biochemical approaches to study the role of tyrosine kinases in signal transduction during early neuronal development.
